going to plummet further. charlie, gayle, norah? >> don, thank you. president obama is calling for a hike in the national minimum wage. on wednesday the president said that growing income inequality is the defining challenge of our time. this morning fast food workers across the country are holding strikes to demand higher wages. terrell brown is outside a mcdonald's in new york city. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there are about 200 protesters here in new york city. they have since dispersed and moved on to other locations. there are other rallies in 200 cities across the country including denver las vegas and san diego as workers push for higher wages, $15 an hour more than twice the national minimum wage. nancy delgado makes $8 coin 25 for the work she does at a chicago area mcdonald's. the 27-year-old mother of two has been employed at the fast food chain's franchises for the last ten years and earns the minimum wage in illinois. >> i don't have health insurance. i don't own a car, i don't own cable. i have a cell phone because i need it. i

time soon. >> pelley: michelle, thanks very much. in another important story tonight, the health care web site faced its first big test today since the obama administration said that it met its deadline to make healthcare.gov work smoothly for the vast majority of shoppers. trouble since the site's debut in october has cut into enrollments. we learned today that 100,000 signed up in november for a total of more than 206,000 so far, but that is a million short of the enrollees projected. wyatt andrews has been checking into the web site today. wyatt? >> reporter: scott, the administration says that 375,000 people tried to shop on healthcare.gov and that was before noon today. officials called that a strong sign of interest but, again, that high a number created some problems. when june miles-mays tried to sign up for obamacare at a miami health center, the web site put her on hold. "we need you to wait" the site advised "so we can make sure there's room for you." it was her third attempt at signing up. >> very frustrating for me because i need insurance so badly and it seems like somet

. charlie, norah, and gayle? >> jen, thank you. south africa is preparing for tomorrow's memorial service for former president nelson mandela. president obama and his wife michelle, will attend. they are aboard air force one at this hour. and in south africa mandela's family is putting aside its differences this morning. debora patta is in johannesburg. >> good morning. i just spoke to south africa's minister of public works and administration. she was inside the house with the mandelas and described the image in there as calm. the family is very calm. inside is nelson mandela's widow and his former wife winnie. the family has been embroiled in squabbling and fighting over the past six mos but she said you would never think so if you walked in there today. they are the picture of unity, coming together, focused only on nelson mandela. now, as i was talking to them they left to go to one military hospital in pretoria. the minister told me that the body of nelson mandela has now been prepared by undertakers and he is draped in the clothes that eventually he will be buried in.
